IV/61 Italian Condotta

This army was started a long time ago when I was going to play Italian Wars RRR. I used some of the Mirliton Condotta figures to make up the Italian Wars Florentine army. To complete the 2.2 list I painted up some CB and more KN. The end result is thta you will see some familiar figures, if you have been following along.

I added three KN stands to round out the army. I have been trying to paint the Mirliton KN for almost four months and finally cried uncle. I just was not happy with the miniatures. Clean and detailed but not for me. I makes me want to sell the figures i bought for the Crusades from Mirliton rather then paint them. I fell back on the OG figures I bought for RRR. Old faithful, wins the day.
OK, call me lazy. I painted up soe Mirliton CB and really hemmed and hawed over how to mount them. I was concerned about DBA 3.0 making the 8BW stands go away, I was worried about mounting them all to a 40mm stand, and I did not want to paint the SP. I win, I mounted the CB and left a ledge for some PK to stand on. Looks good to me. Maybe not the best troop to take in the woods but will look nice on the game board.

I think all the figures are OG minus the; ART and crew, LH, PS, and the CB figures which are all Mirliton.

Perseous and Pegasus

This was a great project. I wanted to make a hero for the Greeks. I figure he can be used as either an Areal Hero or Hero or for that matter a flyer. The miniature is a Xyston Greek General. The wings are from a Demonworld Harpy (we had chicken for dinner and saved the wings). I just glued them forward of the rider for fit.
I mounted the rear two horse legs to a piece of wood which in turn was glued to an up-right piece of wood to give some stability to the structure forming a C with the base. I filled the C with blue foam and wood puttied the rest. I took some care in making it appear to be waves at the bottom of the stand.

Can not wait to play this piece in the up and coming HoTT doubles tourney at cold Wars 2012.

New Russian Tank

I just finished a British tank for my Russians. I am looking forward to playing it in some HiTT battles coming soon.

The miniature is from Blue Moon Manufacturers. Entirely of Resin. I used an old 15mm trench piece to make the trench section. I wanted it to look like it was attacking the German trenches. Couple crates to finalize the look.

I/2b Italian Wars French

Here is the completed RRR French list I started several months ago by painting the Artillery. Thanks David Crenshaw for selling me the base list for these and the Germans. You got my paint brush going for RRR.

The Artillery are all Old Glory. I got these from Mike Sanderson back in MO. I finally got them painted, Mike. Wish I could cross these guys with your French.Wanted the three to appear as a battery. The defensive position is just differently sized dowels glues down in a half moon design. Worked well.

The General and his Knights. The KN stands are all Essex and the indivdual commander is Old Glory.These are Old Glory as well. The Italian "traitors" Merc SH. I even gave them some Blue feathers so that they would match.

Went with two PK, LH, and a SK for the rest of the army. I have been torn about having more PK, but decided against it in favor of some maneuverability.

II/9k Khmelnitsky’s Ukrainian Rebellion

This is a photo of Khmelnitsky. I tried to make the commander look like him including his mace. The only thing I changed from his outfit was the color of his hat. I wanted it blue to tie into the main force of the army.Here is the while army arrayed. I chose the snow and winter terrain because I think of Ukraine as cold as heck.

This is the base force for this Cossack army. I decided to paint them in uniform to represent the Cossack forces that rebelled against the Polish king.
Here are the other PK and SH group of the army. These guys are less uniform coming form the Cossack provinces as more forces joined Khmelnitsky.
I had a great time painting the detail on these OG figures.
The two Russian sled guns are scratch built. I could not find any pictures of these but decided to design them as such.

For the SH general option I chose to place a mounted figure in with the SH to signify the leader stand. I was surprised it fit so well. The foot general is supposed to be Khmelnitsky, himself.

In the case I go with a LH option, here is the General and his body guard.
I had a blast making this camp. Figured the Cossacks would not leave home without some kinda booze. Gotta keep warm in the winter weather. The words are Russian for Beer! The date has no historical reference. 1482 was a good year for beer.

I/42 Neo-Elamite

Very basic painting. Went towards a poorer version of these ancient Persians.
Had no complaints about the army pack. It had a good variety of BW and others

Here is the RRR army in entirety. All additional figures are Essex.

I decided to use the German state of Saxony for the theme of this army. I just did not want the mixed look. I know I went alittle overboard with this idea, but I am happy with the results.

IV/13d Medieval German

I picked up most of the figures for this army from David Crenshaw in one of his closet cleaning sales. I bought a RRR army and decided to flush it out in order to make one for DBA as well.The army is comprised of Essex miniatures minus the artillery gun and crew which are Old Glory.
For the 6KN, I decided to use an additional 40mmx60mm stand topped with a metal sheet instead of mounting them directly. This just gives me some flexibility to use the same KN stands for both armies and/or DBA 3.0.

This is my first DBA-RRR army that is only for the RRR game. Guess I am sold. The figures are mostly OG. The LH, Artillery, Ps are from my Mirliton Condotta army(which I have not painted yet.) Italian wars tourney here I come.

I finally finished a Theban project that has spanned several months. This is the first army I have painted that I painted the shields before gluing them onto the figures. It helped with keeping the Hercules club uniform.

I built these Wwg from wood and wood putty. The cannon is a dowel and the solid wheels are made from some spare buttons since I could not find anymore wheels...ah who cares. My daughter choose the design for the tops. Not exactly ancient Chinese but it made her happy to help me.

I truly think that the OG figures for the Ming and Yi are some of the best I have seen. My Koreans finally have someone historical to fight over rice with! Or more likely rice wine!!
The only real draw back this army has is that it only has two LH :(

I traded for this army from Mike Sanderson at Fall Recruits. It is too cold to spray outside so I took pictures of it un-sprayed. I will spray it in the spring. I did not want to paint all the shields the same so I changed up the colors on the same design.

I have been interested in this army for some years now. I was interested in having a Littoral army with both an ART and a low aggression. Something about a waterway and a BUA at the same time. Sounded cool. I bought the CB some years ago with a gift certificate from Time portal hobbies for a DBA tourney. I recently picked up the ART and the BD from ebay. The Knight figures I had from the 100YWE army I bought years ago as well.
This is the first army I made with snow on the stands. I use a paste from Deco art called snow-tex. works great and hardens in about three hours.

III/70a Georgian

This is the first army I have painted in months. I guess I have finally settled down in Kansas and have begun to paint again. I have been compensating for my lack of painting by purchasing more lead...go figure. I picked up this army at Recruits 2010.
The general has my first attempt at making a cape with putty. I think it turned out fine.
The spear are slightly different. I would have preferred to have all three stands the same figures. The recruits/mercs will have to do.
Yes, I only took two of the possible four LH. Not like me at all.

II/13 Samnites

I bought these OG figures back at NASHCON in 2004ish. I have been tinkering with them for some time now and finally got a wild hair to paint them. I varied the tunic color for my own sanity and only painted two shields per pattern to give it a little diversity.
The All and powerful General, Not! Cv General is here but when everyone else heads for the hills or trees what does he do?
I originally was going to paint the Ax into two legions with a 'command' stand for each. Those figures got used for some other army so away wen that idea.
Maybe I should call them Sam's Knights to give them inspiration for the open pool table like boards they might find themselves on?

Yes, Cheesie Cheater army. However, Since I had the Normans already it made sense to make the rest of the options. Tony gave me the wagon and I think the priests are from Museum miniatures. The horses are Essex and the two bow men are OG. Much to my irritation I was not thinking when I put glued two stands together to make the 80mm stand that I could not do math....it is actually 90mm. opps. People will just have to get over it.

I wanted to do both the Sp and Bd option for dismounts however I really did not want to spend the extra time or pick up another pack of troops to make it happen so I just made it two Sp and two Bd per stand. I figure I will just tell people what they are dismounting into at the beginning of the game.

I/27 Early Hebrew

I purchased these figures in an army pack from eBay about three months ago for 5 bucks. I guess nobody wanted to out bid me. Personally, I just wanted to play with a Ax General. Sounded like fun at the time. They have been sitting half painted for about two months and needed finished. I am trying to finish up all the loose projects before I head home from Korea.
I made all the Ax have shields and the Wb have none to differentiate between the two troop types.

III/47 Pecheneg

I have been eyeballing this army for some years now and finally found figures I liked best. The mounted are all OG and the Wwg are Museum. I know they are A-historical in color. I wanted them to look colorful and gypsy'ish. I had a lot of fun painting the shields and the designs on the wagons.
The General and four of the Lh. The Cv are from the Asiatic range. More for Mongols then Pecheneg but they seemed to fit the look I wanted.
More Lh
Firstly, These wagons are one pain in the butt to put together. They both have huge amounts of putty. This first wagon, I wanted to have a flowering vine feel. I added the drivers seat assembly. It was made from wood and attached with plan glue. I made it wider then wagon so I could perhaps place two figures on it in the future.
The blue wagon is way out in 'Flower Child' range. I wanted something bold and bright, I think I got it. The roster on the tailend was ensipred by a gypsy painting I found on the internet. Added a nice flare in my opinion. Nothing historical about them, but I like how they turned out.

I/25 c and d Koreans DBA-RRR

Finished!!, This is a combination of the DBA base Yi Koreans and the I/25c and d Koreans from DBA-RRR. I did not paint all the options available but painted what I thought I might use at some point.
Some of the flags used photographed in the Korean War Museum.
My additional ART piece. Not completely happy with the construction of the model but I think it gets the job done. I figured since the other Korean ART had a flag this one needed one too. I utilized two guerrilla figures to form the crew since OG does not make any.
The General 'O' and the other LH and PS options.
Three more Pk options giving the army a total of five.
Two 5Wb and the only Bd available.
The last two elements I painted. These are from the Ming line of OG. I used them for the Korean shot because they were available and the Koreans were greatly influenced by the Chinese during this period.

IV/78 Yi 'Choson' Koreans

The pictures of the flags are from the Korean War Museum in Seoul. I was excited to use designs from what I had seen. In the DBA-RRR army mod more of the flag designs were used.
I finished the last stands for the Yi Koreans last night. I have been delayed completing the army because I got stuck on the three Cv elements. When stuck, I put things away and work on something else like the Gauls and Alexander and usually find myself coming back to it after awhile. The Old Glory figures used in this army are absolutely the best OG have out! Crisp, clean and with a variety of poses per pack. You might notice the labels on the stands, I am tracking kills for each stand in DBA-RRR and this is the base army for my I/25 Korean list 'Choson' Renaissance army soon to be posted.
The trouble makers....I chose the General with the fan so that he would stand out from the rest of the formation. The figure variation was great for the Cv.
The LH, enough said!:)
The foot, the army has a splattering of different troop types. The colors were influenced by Perry miniatures home page.
The Hd and the ART were alot of fun to put together. I looked at the ART as Chinese rocketeers. Of course they needed a flag to wave around so that the enemy could honorably fire back, right?

II/12 Alexandrian Macedonians

IV/42 Islamic Persians

Ahhh, The Persians are finally completed!! For someone that does not like to play with Cv, Eight is quite enough. I purchased these Essex from a DBA 1.1 army pack back in Nashville at a discount. This is the last one of those 50% off armies I bought back then, thank goodness. Much like the Gauls, I have begun, stopped, stripped, and repainted this army more then once. I just finally said to my self, " paint them or throw them away" So I painted them.
The General and his staff....and of course the Lh.
The first four Cv stands. I originally wanted this army to be drab with browns, greens, and grays...I obviously did not like how that turned out.
The other three
The Hd and the two Bw. These have been painted for almost four months starring at me to finish the mounted. It was one of my failed inspirational attempt to kick start my butt into painting the army. I failed until recently.

II/11 Gallic

Finally completed a four year project. I bought these figures back in 05...I think. I have begun to paint them twice since i bought them. I wanted them for my Marions to pick on but quickly lost interest.
I know most would have selected the Chariot General but i like a challenge. Besides I think it would be fun to charge heavy foot with a fanatic. This general stand has the trumpeter wounded. I guess he should have put on some clothes before showing up with the warlord.
The first four WB. I used the camp followers with their loyal mutt for one of the stands. Sometimes you gotta give the farm boys a go.
Finally, The two Cv. I supposed this army needs these guys to fight in the open but I have no intentions of fighting on an open plain. Maybe the Cv will go graze near the camp?

WWI Russians

Finally, Here are the Russians in entirety. I could not be happier with the Peter Pig WWI range, well at least the Russians. Although a little smallish, around 12mm, they are incredibly detailed and deeply cut to provide the best painting opportunity.
The last two pieces to the army were the MMG. I have been waiting for them on back order from Peter Pig. I did things slightly different with these two stands in order to get the terrain the way I wanted it. I made and puttied the terrain with out the figures on the stands. After gluing the figures down I coated the stands again with putty to hide the lead bases. Much of the difficulty I have had in the past has been due to the putty in tight spaces. Not an issue with this method....just took longer to finish.

I added the Crew to my Russian Artillery Piece. I think that they just made the gun a nicer piece. You will notice the name on the back of the stand. I have kept track of all my DBA games over the years but have not gone down to the units. I figured since I was just starting HiTT and DBA-RRR that I would track individual stands record. It may get cumbersome at some point but I think it will be fun.
Really like the great coat clad Russians. I wish Peter Pig made more poses and options wearing the coat. I would build a winter version of the army.

II/35 Later Macedonians

I was looking for another Pike Army and well here it is. I have the figures for a conversion to II/12 Alexander Macedonians and will paint them up here soon.
I added shields to the Cv General to make sure they differed from the Cv element in Alex's army.
I decided to make each set of Pike slightly different by painting the tunics different colors. I could not descide on a shield pattern for the Pike so I chose to make the shields color common but changed the design.
I know that these don't really fit the army but I figured some Hoplites would fit what I pictured in my mind.
Absolutely love the Gaul/Galatians figures from Xyston. I wish they had chariots for the line.

III/9b Burmese

Picked this Chariot army up from Rudy with Time Portal Hobbies minus the elephants. I can not even remember which RECON/HURICON it was anymore. I had some spare elephants from Essex I bought an even longer time ago in Nashville and modified them to work. Thank you Chip for the Bw riders and the extra Bw figures. You made the army possible. I have been avoiding finishing the army for three months now. I glued the riders on the elephants before I painted them...ouch what a pain in the A.
The general and his Cv. The General and the driver are Essex. I think this is only one of two mixed armies I have in my collection. Not sure why, just is.
The EL. I glues twisted string across the backs of the elephants in order to give the straps for the Burmese archer seats. The benches are just wood. It was a slight irritation to get them to fit right but once there....well they are really glued.
Lots of Ax. The figures are quite nice and detailed if not a bit small and skinny.
Chose to have two Cb and one Bw just for variety. This is not the prettiest army I have painted. I wanted them to look different then the matched pair, the Hindu other list III/10c.

WWI Russian Cont.

Russian Sturmtrupe. I tried to make it look like they were in the process of working through a trench or crossing the wire. Figures were not very versatile.
Still waiting on my crew to arrive from Brookhurst. I wanted the gun to be apart of the defensive position. I guess if it moves the engineers are going to have to work very fast to move the burm and install the floor:)
This Staff Car, although worthless in the game, was so cute looking I just needed to paint the thing.

I/14b Shang Chinese

This is almost the last army I have left from a NASH CON purchase in 06. I have been waiting to paint this army until I figured out what configuration I wanted to have. I still don't know! I scratch upgraded the General to a HCH, used the 2x AX option but made them half Bw so I could switch without painting more figures, and lastly I chose to paint 4xBw and 2xPs (here is where I had more lead so I could have painted all the Bw).
The General was made up of several horses from other armies and countries. I shaved off the saddles and reins in order to make them look more chariotish. The chariot was also missing a cross bar so i made one from wood.
The Bd were the last to be painted. I had some crazy faces painted on the shields and truthfully, that was what was keeping me from finishing the army back in DEC 09. I just did not like the shield design. These characters are from a scroll I found on the Internet, of course. From left to right they mean; Ox, Wood, and Mountain.
The 4xBw. I cut the plumage of the helmets to give them a different look from the Spring Autumn Chinese. You know Essex, they tend to use similar figures for different armies.
Here are the light troops. The character on the Ps means Moon and the Ax means Sun.

I received my Peter Pig Russians Monday and well...I have been busy painting them. I also began working on the Storm troopers and the crew for my staff car this evening. This is going to be fun.

WWI Russian Spotting Balloon

What fun. I wanted a balloon for my artillery to shoot with. Gotta have heaps of artillery, right? I decided on a 40x60mm stand so I could give the balloon a good stable base. The 40x40 seemed to small for what I had in mind. I wanted the balloon to have a stable base. I pegged and glued the dowel from the base to the basket. I then puttied the base. As a detail I carved two sand bags to hang from the baskets undercarriage. I like how it turned out. The bags were carved out of the same dowel used as the base support.
For the balloon I used the same old blue foam. I cut the top off of an eye drop bottle for the hot air intake of the balloon. I also used a smaller dowel to support the balloon above the base. One requirement I had for this piece was for it to fit in my figure case. That requirement forced me to make in two pieces. The balloon section has a magnet on the bottom of it as well. I paper mached the balloon with toilet paper and a very watered down Elmer's glue. Kinda tedious, maybe should have used putty and made it smooth. I just wanted to make it as light as possible. Besides its fun to do different things. The thread was tied and glued around the balloon.
I based the whole thing black and began the painting adventure. I decided on a tri-color camo I found on a Russian gun.
Here is the finished product along with some very confused Persians for a size comparison. I also threw in some wire I had just finished.
Thank you Terry for the flag web page. I figured it needed something to say "Russian" If for nothing else to keep the Russians from shooting at it. :)

WWI Barbed wire

I was asked to show the steps in making the barbed wire for the WWI terrain I was working on. Here you go. Drill out the post locations with small hand drill, if you go through the stand don't worry about it. I used needles cut in half for the posts but I think you could use any wire.
I use Elmer's wood putty for my bases. I puttied the stands and allowed them to dry completely. I then took nylon thread and began to tie the "wire" on. I just tied one end and twisted the thread around the posts and glued into place. I tried to tie off the other end but it would not stay tight. I then took the same thread and tied a knot on every straight piece of "wire" for effect.
Finish off by painting the stand. Then paint eh wire to your liking. I used a chain mail mixed with Tin for the wire and highlighted the barbs with straight chain mail. Very solid and easy.

WWI HITT Stuff

So I got excited about working on some WWI guys. I ordered some Russians from Peter Pig this past weekend. I wish they where here already. I am not very patient when it comes to waiting for figures to get here. Here is my Barrage and my poison gas stand. The poison is just plastic cut-outs from a notebook. I cut a grove in the stand and glued them in place. The plastic does not paint or spray so you have to be careful with it.

This was fun to build. The Russian bunker/Stronghold. I have no intentions on being on the defensive....although the dice may give their two cents. The majority of this building made from wood. I then put some foam on the top for the dirt and then coated the entire thing, minus the floor boards, in wood filler. Turned out nice. It is mounted on a 40x60mm stand. No one will actually fit in there, but from what I understand the stronghold comes with defenders already.

I wanted to make some wire for the game. I tinkered around a bit and decided to use thread and some wire to make Barbed wire stands. The thread was woven through the uprights and glued in place. The "barbs" are just knots in the thread. I will post the troops when they arrive and are painted.

II/78b Late Imperial Roman East

Bought these Essex figures off E-bay for half price. I love shopping deals. It has been some time since my last post. I had a period of the "I don't feel like painting" and I went on vacation. But here we go. I had these finished in November minus a few odds and ends. I finished them yesterday and based them this morning. I enjoyed looking up shield designs and adding my own impression making it my army.

The General and his minions.

The Cataphracts. I had one lance that was damaged so I replaced it with a standard. The standard is a-historical but was fun anyway. Made from thread and a piece of wood on a staff. Some might complain that they are confused when a banner is not on the generals stand....oh well if they can not tell the difference between a Cv general and a Cataphract :) surprise!!

The mighty Bd.

The light troops that make the army versatile. I just wish they had a Bw unit or two.

IV/57c Low Countries

New addition to the army. The Pk General option.
Been along time getting another Army completed. I have been in a painting slump for quite some time. I have three more armies that are with in two stands of completion and have not moved on them in a month. This army is all Museum Miniatures. I got a majority from Anderson (from Fanaticus) and filled out the ranks from Museum to make it all one manufacturer. The figures are huge. The pike are just slightly taller then my Xyston Geeks and the general, well a David and Goliath match for sure. All in all though, they are just fine when placed together.

Really enjoyed the flags for this army. Lots of fun to color coordinate and make them unique.

The two knights on the right stand ended up being smaller then the rest. Not sure why Museum does things like that in the same line. I know different sculptures were used, but darn it I want them to match.

Gun, I guess I have alot of these in my army pool. I seem to be distracted by the cannons.

Last but not least, the ash and trash of the army. Well the combat multipliers anyway.

Rules Question about turning to face

The initial landing force moved in from the coast. No issue. I had placed one Bd element in front of my camp so that if attacked it could fall back into the camp.

At this point, Tony's Bd element moved to attack my Bd in front of the camp. Problem, the contact was legal however when my Bd turned to face we found that their was not enough room . The options as well see them are as follows; One, there is no contact made. Two, the Bd moves into the camp and defends it. or Three, both elements shift away from the camp to make room.

We chose, no contact. Figured if my Bd pushed into the camp then Tony's Bd would not really have moved the way it did. Secondly we decided that to move both elements and make room would interfere with other elements on both sides lining up and did not sound right. Thoughts?

OK, so the kick in the butt worked very well. I just finished the second army of the weekend. These guys, just like the Scots-Irish were virtually completed just lacking a few colors. I purchased these figures at HISTORICON 2008 from Wargames. Have been sort of sitting on them unmotivated until here recently. This is the first army I introduced large boulders onto. I was attempting to give the impression of the forested glades that the Army is supposed to fight in. How an army with eight mounted fights in the woods is beyond me.

The Army has an option for a LH general and a Cv General. I chose to paint one of each. I also plan on using these same stands to interchange between the Cv or LH option as well. Generally, I never plan on having two Cv stands.

Got lucky with these Essex figures in that the horses were very animated and fit well on the rocks.

II/54a Scots-Irish

Finialy finished the OG Scots-Irish. I had them mostly done for almost two weeks. Much to long for only needing to finish the flesh and hair. Seems the kick in the shorts worked well.This is the first painted army I have with Light Chariots, eek more Cv. I took some artistic licence with the colors used. The istory says green, saffron, and linin colors with the ocational red. Oh well so much for historial garb, my guys just took it as spoils of war.

Belive it of not this is not the most Ax I have in an army. I am growing accustomed to usign them and am getting pretty fair at it.

Tried to use a woven look to the plad so that I could shade the colors better. Made it easier for me to keep track of the pattern.

Always looking for a different way to get a camp further into the battlefield with out "cheating". Wanted a wall section for my Early Europeans to hide behind and came up with this design. I think I will add a ladder to the rear of the fighting area in the future.

IV/18 Lithuanians have been sitting in the box for some time now. I am mostly posting these projects to kick my own butt into gear so that I finish them and get them properly posted with eh rest of the list. These Essex figures really had some motion to them. Especially the horses (for a change) I felt like putting some large boulders in the stands to give it the forest glen look...more grass then dirt.

These are II/54 Scotts-Irish. I finished the Chariots and am procrastinating about painting the flesh and hair that will finish the AX and Ps. Just being lazy and need to motivation to finish them. As I near the end of my lead to paint ( my pet project) I am becoming less excited about painting the figures I have and more likely to dilly dally in different armies.

I was very nervous about painting plaid. I really like how the plaid turned out. More of a weave then I thought I was going for but he shading helped a lot. More colorful then they should be as well. But what the heck, its my army anyway, right? The Leader's plaid is painted as the Calhan plaid from my family. Something of a blue with green stripping with a line yellow line in between. I did not paint the yellow because it ended up being to over powering.

II/77 Silla Koreans

This is the first of three Korean Armies that I intend to paint here in Korea. I figure it is more then appropriate. I was waiting to paint these until I visited the Korean War Museum in Seoul. I took pictures of the Silla uniforms from the museum and painted the army to match as close as I could. The Cataphracts were not depicted in the museum. The Figures are from Time Portal Hobbies, Thanks guys!

These guys stumped me for about a week and a half while I figured out what I wanted them to look like. Nothing like a kick in the shorts to get you moving in the right direction again. The Dragon Turtle idea came to mind as something different. Besides I did not want the flag to look like Tony's.

These are the two units of PK and the Ps and LH. Much more of the same coloration. I was disappointed in the length of the pikes. I would have replaced them however they were not easily removed without the risk of damage to the figures

The Trident Sp. These guys prompted me to paint three empty 15mm stands magenta so that they would be safe in the case. These guys would not mess with anyone especially themselves. Oh well at least they are aggressively charging forward like they think they might attack something.

I was intrigued that their were two different figures for the Bw. painted the hoods on the two stands different colors to give them some individuality. Looking forward to painting the other two armies while I am here. I will wait for a bit so that I will be excited about Koreans again before I begin.

III/51 Normans

The Norman Army is solely OG figures purchased from Rudy with Time Portal Hobbies about a year ago. This army is a continuation of cleaning out the lead drawer and trying to begin fresh, Yeah right!

The General and three of his KNs. No issues or secrets painting these guys. I did however decide very quickly that I did not like the OG shield design. I would have preferred a shield with no raised edges for a better design area.

More KNs. One of these will probably never fight. I will more then likely always use the CV and the LH to help the overly zealous KNs recover from their charges.

The CV and LH. I enjoyed the CV and LH figures because they are not encased in Chain mail. The center rider in the CV is an excess KN figure I used to replace a CV guy that did not make the move to Korea. Squish!

I painted these foot about 8 months ago and never got moving on all the KNs. They made it over here painted and on stands but not finished. The option for this army is either two Bw or Two Ps or in my case probably one and one, with two Sp.

III/40d Viking Leidang

Here are the Viking Leidang as promised. I got demoralized somewhere in the middle of the Bd stands and finally got back to them. All in all the Essex figures were great. I used most of the posses that I purchased. Their are different posses that I did not receive in the army pack. As I may have mentioned before, I purchased this army on Ebay for half the price of the army pack and added extra figures to make it the D list.

Here are the General and the Hd stands that I posted about a week ago. I believe that these two stands will see most of the action. Well they might die fast and thus take all the action to be had. I look forward to taunting my opponent with the Hd stand.

The Bd, I used mostly typical Axemen to form the Bd elements. I only limited myself to one stand of Berserkers. These guys made the Bd cut and did not have to join the Horde of slave getter's.

I liked the typical flags used for Vikings but when i painted them it did not fit the look I wanted. I figure these guys all want to go to sea and pillage, right? Well I figured a ship that they never get to board was essential to completing the army. I also made the flag stand with a "commander" so that if I was inspired ot paint the other five stands of Bd I could complete the B list of Vikings.

I opted for two Ax instead of two more Bd stands as well as one Bw and one Ps. I figured that this would allow this army to fight in the woods and help deter the timid French Knights from attacking, Terry!

Up and Coming projects

I am currently working on two projects; the Silla Koreans and the Viking Leidang. I was solely painting the Vikings however I recently made a trip to the Korean War Museum and was inspired to begin my Korean projects. Yes, Projects, I have the Koryo and will soon have the Yi Korean armies to be painted. The magenta jacket and red belt were taken from the museums interpretation of what a Silla Soldier would look like. The figures are from Rudy of Time Portal Hobbies. Very nice castings, great figures that fit the Korean lists extremely well.

Assuming that the Leidang were the vikings that did not go to sea. It can be assumed that their would be leftover berzerkers with nothing to do in the village except pester the women folk and break things. The Hd option for the army is my interpretation of where bored Berzerkers go. I assigned them a slave hungry overseer and plan on unleashing them upon my enemies. "Bring me more slaves"

This photo shows the Kn General stand. I noticed while photographing this that my General had a catastrophic spraying issue. Well fixable issue anyway. It was to humid when I sprayed and it shows on the metallic parts of the figures. They are going in for a touch-up-overhaul

Very happy with the Essex Vikings. Lots of poses and clean castings. I especially like the Kn figures.

II/28d Armenian Gordyene

I bought these figures at RECON 09 from Rudy Nelson from Time Portal Hobbies. He is the only vendor that enjoys coming to support Florida's DBA players. Go Rudy, Gray, and Chip.

I had the opportunity to play Tony's Armenian B list against his Marion Romans last year and fell for the Army. Since I did not want the very same army he had I opted for the D list instead. I am totally happy with the OG figures selected for the army.

I wanted to give the Kn elements a Persian feel so I made them more colorful then I was originally going to. The lances are dulled sewing needles, as usual.

This is what I love about this army. Four Lh!

The unsuspecting peasant rabble. Of course that's what I want you to believe. Better watch these guys they are sneaky.

I went with two ART pieces on the stand due to the size of the stolen Roman launchers. I also needed a camp while I am in Korea. For that reason I built a small "rise" camp for my ART to sit on and observe the battlefield.

I/35d Phoenicians

I purchased these Xyston Miniatures from Brookhurst Hobbies some time ago. I was originally interested in a low aggression, Littoral army with an ART option. The Phoenicians fit the bill with their Littoral, AG 0. I wanted to experiment with a combination of a waterway and a BUA utilized to narrow the playing field. I wanted to do this to give the Sp line a chance to dominate the center with less of a chance to get flanked. I hope it works.

Xyston has three different sets of Phoenician Sp. They had Marines, Veteran, and another I can not remember right now. I wanted to have three veteran Sp as a landing force and have another three with the main. I opted out of the seventh Sp for an Ax that you will see further down the page. The General is in the lead Sp element. He is the only guy with a sword in the whole army.
I cut off a Sword from an unsuspecting extra guy and added it to a Phoenician Sp to make the leader stick out. He, of course, also has his private flute player next to him to keep him in step.

The Ax and 3 Ps. I intend not to make the other five optional Ax stands.

These are some Greek Cv figures. I tried to use some that were not to far fetched. I assumed that they would have been mercs anyway.

The ART was fun to set-up. I used a dowel to build the broken pillar. I am very excited to use this army here in the next few weeks.

Mini Tourney in Korea.

I had the opportunity to play DBA today with two guys I meet over Fanaticus Forum in Korea. What a treat. I never figured that I would get to play over here during my stay here. Ralph and his friend David and I played today in a mini tourney between the Gauls and the Carthaginians. The armies were from 1.1 DBA but we played the rules from 2.2. Was different, but worked out just fine. This is the final battle between myself (Gauls) and David (Carthaginians). We each played each other twice, so we all got in four games today, pretty cool.

Anyway the Carthos won terrain. The waterway was placed and I was lucky enough to have the water at my backside. So here is the rules question....Did we play/set-up this up legally? We placed our camps (mine is on the edge of the board at the left corner of the waterway). I arrayed my troops across the entire waterway minus the 3" "No set-up" zone. Once I removed the cards from my set-up it left the Carthos a 3" set-up ares for his landing force. By the way his landing force consisted of his CV General, a CV, and 2 x LH. Mean while his other forces were in a split formation on his side of the board. You will see them sluggishly moving across on the final picture.

Understanding the rules. The landing force must have two of its elements edges touching the edge of the waterway. He had plenty of room:) The way I see it, He had to land where I wanted him or not show up for the battle. Obviously, his general wanted to fight so he showed up. The first turn turned out to be bloody as my CV turned to face his GEN and another CV. The CV died and his General locked. Yes Terry, he was rolling like you usually do....his first four roles added up to about 5.

The Gauls formed columns and began to move to the right in order to get to fight as well. Mostly since my GEN was a WB and was feeling left out. Never even drew his Sword on this one. Things began to get worse for the Carthos and a LH was killed fighting the Gauls. Then David's die began to get better and he surged by moving his othe forces forward for a few turns. he also killed one of the Gaul CV and was looking pretty good. The LH was killed by a CV and a Ps door closing and then the General was on his own. Man that guy most assuredly eat his Wheaties this morning. He repulse a four stand pile-up three times. Finally, The Gaul CV got him with no recoil into a Gaul Ps. Game over.

Here you see the rest of the Carthos trudging along oblivious to the carnage that had taken place.

The question/interesting thing about this whole game was the Gauls set-up. Interesting point that if it was legal (we could not find anything to say it was not) Then you can basically set the landing force up for destruction. I would recommend, in this instance to opt for putting your back to a water way to discourage a Littoral landing.

IV/80 Hussites

This Hussite Army was bought from Wargame's before Baxter took over. They were back ordered for almost a year. When I received them I found that the army pack, much to my irritation, had multiple WWG from different nationalities and only two posses of Bd. This put the army on hold for a very long time. I realized that the WWg figures were not the "Hussite" type wagon I was looking to have represent the army. I took the three wagons that were the same and converted them into what you see. The wagons sides are made from wood. I took the center wall and hung it on the outside of the wagon to give the fortress look so typical to the Hussite's. At HISTORICON 2008, I purchased two more wagons (the same ones as the three converts) and a slew of other Bd/Sp figures to diversify the force. The general has also been converted to hold a mace as well. I have not figured out how to get semi-gloss spray paint here in Korea yet, so these have not been sprayed.

Tony and I deliberated at length whether or not to mount the WWG on a 40x80 or two 40x40's. The 40x40's won and I could not be happier with the look. All the flags in this army are made from paper folded over the staff. These flags were made before I figured out how to use my computer to size and duplicate the sides and then print them before painting. The Writing on the one wagon is from a Brewery that was founded during the Hussite wars and is still manufacturing beer to this day. Every army should have its own beer wagon.

Here are the 4 Blade elements. I wanted them to look as rag tag as possible. I even added some armored monks tot he ranks.

I saw someones Hussite gun hiding behind a shield wall, (Mark Barker on eye candy) Loved the idea, so here you go.

The General and the all powerful Lh. Ok, so I like LH what can I say?

II/4c Waring States Chinese, Chao

I purchased these Essex Chinese from Baxter at Wargames back when they were on that great sale over the holidays. I was intending to paint them for the David and David Waring States theme at HISTORICON, unfortunately I will not be attending. They are painted however!! I used a different static grass color this time. They look kinda neon but I like the look.

Here is the General and his side kick. I wanted these tiger skins to look different from the ones on my Spring Autumn Chinese so I painted them like Siberian Tigers to match the flag. So far these guys need a win, they are 0-2 :(

The Essex spear are a pain. I had to mount them all together so that they would mess at least one way. Not a real issue gaming, especially when you play with nice people. Had I been able to select the spear figures I would have selected all 90 and 45 degree posses and left the level spears in the store.

As I am finding out through playing. My favorite element, the LH.

The CB and PS are fun as well but are too slow for the likes of me.

Chinese Camp

Figured I needed a new Generic Chinese camp for my many un-painted Chinese armies. I was inspired from a few pictures I found on the web and added some flavor to it. The gate and fence is made from dowels and flat wood stock. I also used string to tie the posts together. The stand is made from my standard blue foam, Elmer's wood putty and some gravel (for the road).

I bought these guys from Baxter at Wargames, when they were on sale. I bought them to be the matched pair for my Sassanid Persians. Unfortunately, my Persians keep getting their butts kicked by everyone. I am pretty sure these Arabs will do the same to them.

I used one of the second camel riders for the Generals companion. The army came with another of the armored riders.

I really did not like having the camels all double riders. Something wrong about two guys riding double...... I took some of the riders and added spears and shields to them. I also made some saddle bags and extra baggage for the camels to carry to balance out the figure a little bit. The other issue was with the camels themselves. They were all two poses. I bent some of the heads back, some forward, and some to the side to break up the lines of the stand.

I really liked the variety of the Bd that the pack had. No stands have any of the same figures on them.

No army would be complete with out the power of the Ps. This army gives you one power house and the option to have a second.

II/69 Sassanid Persians

When I saw these figures form 50Paces, I had to have them. Well, that was a little over a year ago. Apparently, I had to have them weigh down my lead box. I hope you enjoy.

I painted the Cv in as much of a mismatched scheme as I thought I could come up with. I figured each of these nobles bought their own trappings so each should be different. I bored out the fragile lances that where on the molds and replaced them with longer stronger needles.

Love these guys. Here comes trouble. Any where you get that many men together with really nothing to do...they will find a way to screw things up just to have fun.

This elephant was purchased from a old essex box from NASCON. I am not sure what era it came from but it seemed to fit the bill. The riders are Ax and LH figures and the driver was from a Carthaginian elephant also from essex.

The combat multipliers....ok these are the guys that get the HD out of trouble.

I picked these guys up as a DBA 1.1 army for 50% off at NASHCON some years ago and filled in the rest of the guys to be able to build the a,b,and c lists.

I painted the HVY chariots back in September because I was interested in doing the Tiger skins then promptly lost interest in painting the rest of the guys.

Here is the General in his expensive gold armor and his bleached horses.

The 4 x 3Sp were fun. I made up the designs to liven them up and to make the units stand out from each other. Ireally like how the Gold fish turnned out in light blue.

The mis-mash of the army. I think that the 2 x 3Bw will be very useful for this force.

IV/58 Medieval Irish

Here is the latest of several for OCT 08. I bought these guys on a whim form Baxter at Wargames. This is the first army I have ever painted with mixed manufacturers. The army is composed of Essex with a few Corvus Belli mixed in to round off the PS stands.

I chose not to paint the Kn and PK option because I like LH generals and I figured the PK would just slow the army down.

I had a hoot painting the Celtic symbols on the AX shields. A lot of fun.

I had diverse figures to use for the BD but changed my mind as I was base coating the figures black. The other figures looked like my Highlanders and I wanted these guys to look alittle different.

I purchased these guys from Baxter of Wargames Inc. The army is completly built from essex figures. I have begun to paint the lead weighing down my to do box. This army is one of two I painted in under a month.

I used some of the coat of arms for the period to add some diversity to the army. I was disapointed with Essex's variety of Knights in this army pack.

I chose to only build Spanish troops and one alliy. I refuse to paint Frenchies of any type and figured that this was the matched pair for my 100yrs English it did not make sense to use LB.

II/5d Thessalians

I finished this Thessalian Army back in SEP 08. I played a few pick-up games with my friends in FL at HURRICON.

I really enjoyed the spear line as well as the LH maneuverability. The shields were a complete blast to paint. The army is composed of Xyston figures only.

I decided not to build the CV version of this army to make it unique and also to make myself use LH against the SP and PK of the period.

IV/35 Mongol Conquest

I bought the figures for this army some time ago from Museum Miniatures. Tony gave me a couple of CV figures for variety. The Camp and slave figures are Old Glory. I was pumped to paint them and play my friends from Nashville, TN. Well, true to form, I finished only 9 stands of the army before I got bored. After much brow beating from the guys on Fanaticus and my wife to finish them before playing them in this past weekends Mongol theme tourney. They did great, finishing 3-1.

I built this Arty piece for this army because I like building things and because all the ones I found were too large for the stand. I constructed it from square stock bass wood, wire, string, and paper. The sling arm is made from wire wrapped in string. The basket is made from a cut out piece of paper underlayed with string and "glue wrapped" over a large rock. Believe it or not.. before I glued the launching ropes down and fully connected the basket the contraption fired.

Every group of Mongols needs a train of slaves for market, right?

I/7c and d Lybians

This is the Army that I went to HISTORICON to purchase. The army is made from Old Glory and was a complete hoot to paint. Although I got carried away a little, this was my fastest painted army ever, approx 12 hours. Yes, yes only 26 figures or so but a lot of small brush work. Enjoy, I am looking forward to playing my friends with this one. Something completely different for them to deal with.

This camp was fun to make. I used a rubber bust of Nefertiti and some toilet paper to make. The tent is actually string and paper shellacked with Elmer's glue. what fun!!

Well I got tired of having transportable terrain that had no detail. I figured I would layer the felt to add at least the appearance of dimension. or color. I have an on going storage problem for my gaming stuff so building 3D terrain made no sense. Why have woods when you can have another army, right?

The Apulians.... My first Ax Army of several. I have grown to enjoy playing lighter armies as I have gained some experience in playing DBA. This army seems to be a very good mix. I am looking forward to figuring them out soon.

The flag is completely made up. I am not even sure if the Apulian's of this period held a banner of any kind. The symbol for Aries is placed in the center of the boot of Italy. Fitting, the god of War surrounded by Italy.
The Camp is a universal "Greek, Early Italian, etc"

III/10c Hindu

I began to paint this army some time ago. As usual, I became disinterested and moved on to something else for awhile. Well I returned to it in May and here they are. I picked the "other" list because it has a artillery piece option. I wanted to have a colorful army so I descided to use different bright colors instead of drab linen colors for the Butt and head diapers.
I found the Elephant General figure in a boxed marked Misc. $1.00 at Nashcon, what a bargain! I also bought four other elephants at the same time. All the pachyderms are from essex, although I believe they are from an earlier casting. The Tropical plants and trees are my attempt at making the army unique and have a feel of the tropics. They are made of paper and dowels painted like palms.

The cannon is made from a straw and a dowel with Elmer's wood puddy formed around the outside of the straw to form the barrel. While making this army I had to manipulate five of the figures to fit into the category I needed, can you find them? The camp is made of paper, place mat and puddy. I made the houses out of paper tubes with cones for roofs all layered in puddy. The wall is just a cut down bamboo place mat with the stitching still present. I plan on using this camp for several of my Asian armies.

"World Barker Marker"

Wanted a Barker Marker. Grey inspired me with his. I saw the one he had during Recon in Orlando, FL and loved. I of course made some changes to the design. I added a "New" Xyston Phoenician veteran as the topper. I also added a very Medieval Flag. The red and white circles are from my family Coat of Arms. I guess I made it mine.
The globe itself is a plastic ball glued to a 40mm x 40mm stand. I painted the world onto it and added some snow for the poles.

Looking forward to playing against the Italian Slave revolts at Historicon. I believe that the Bd General will strike fear in the Wb peasants hearts. Besides people are funny about playing against troop types that nobody ever really uses. A 7/5 (w/Ps support) sounds pretty daunting to me even with a warbands quick kill capibility.

I purchased the Essex figures to make a Sung army while gaming in Nashville. The army has been half way complete for almost a year now. Fortunately, I have been re-energized to paint here lately and have decided to finish the armies that I started and never completed (one more to go)
Just thought that Bd could use some color and some spiffy flags to whirl around as they "sliced and diced" their many opponents.

I was originally excited to paint this army because it had a Horde in it, Yes you are reading correctly, I love fighting with units who should have stayed home at the farm.
Reminds me of Tonto! How?Here is the true inspiration to the army. Two Artillery pieces, or in this case Rockets. The rockets are carved from wood square stock. The loaders are manipulated crossbowmen with rockets extended from their crossbow shafts. The hot coals are pieces of a drinking straw filled with small rocks and painted red and black. Can not wait to see them shoot at something. Hey, if they miss, at least we will see a marvelous fireworks display.

III/77 Scott Isles and Highlands

I have recently moved to Florida. After a fantastic "End" game of 4 on 4 with the guys playing at Al's in Nashville, TN. I picked this army of Scottish Islanders out to purchase. Much to my humble delight, Baxter, the new guy that took over "Wargames Inc" gave this Essex army to me, as a farewell. It is only right, that I dropped other projects in order to get my gift properly painted and posted. So Baxter, Thank you very much for your generosity and good luck.

I wanted this Army to be uniformly Yellow and Red. I had an enormously good time painting the different color schemes and patterns on the tabards that the blade are wearing. I made every attempt to get the plaid correct for the Mac Donald's...its good enough for me. The camp is my new "Universal" Medieval camp. I am running into storage issues for my DBA stuff. Hmmmmm more armies or more camps? Armies, exactly!! I figure I will make flags for each army listing to change the feel of the camp. I believe I will use this castle for my Germans, English and these Scotts. The castle was scratch built from wood and foam. I built a wooden box with a PVC tube, for the tower. Covered the structure with Elmers wood filler. I then built the batlements out of blue foam. Covering the foam as well with the wood filler. Painted and terrained the piece.
I went with the Bw and Wb combination mostly to be a pain in the butt. Besides 12 Bd are really boring.

Worked on this army with only one goal in mind "Wimp Wars" at RECON, Orlando Florida. Time to fight in a quagmire of forest and step hills...Yeah Ha!! Elephants beware, 6 2Ps are enough to make any pachyderm to proceed with caution.

Elephant Terror BUA

Well, I am getting ready for the DBA Slaughter down in Orlando. I have been assured that my Carthaginian Elephants will stomp down the slow marching Romans. Romans be ware of large pachyderms departing the ancient city gates. I decided to be evil and create a BUA that I can use in the Tournament. I figured if I went with a Ancient Greek type of BUA I could use it for the Greeks, Romans, and Carthaginians. I used Blue core foam for the hill. The trees were plastic Lilac sprues from Walmart. The pillars are simple wood dowels.

I have been sucked into being interested in BUAs. I purchased this Castle from Al in Nashville. It is from JR buildings, I think it is a 6mm building. The flags are all removable. I mostly did this so that I could customize it to an Army and still use it for the rest of my medieval armies. This one has my 100Years English's Artillery Piece in it. Interesting way to utilize a gun in DBA is to put it in a BUA. This raises its defense by +3 and makes it able to fire 360 deg out to 500 paces. Looking forward to using this BUA in the near future against my friend Tony.

IV/13b Medieval Germans

I started painting this army some time ago at my friend Tony's house. We got an itch to play Armotti. Well, it just never got off the ground. The painted stands sat for about 10 years in my figures cases. The figures were ordered from Wargames inc. out of West Virginia and are Essex. When DBA 2.2 came into play, I decided to re-stand and finish this army. Since then, I completed it with all the options.
One thing I learned from finishing this Army was to wrap the flag around the staff or lance vs. a flat one glued onto it. I continually have to glue the multiple flags back onto spear shafts. Kinda annoying.

I believe I enjoy the 2x4Pk option the best. The 2x6Kn stands add an interesting twist and tactical options to this army. I should be knocking on some wood when I say that "So far they are 7 and 0, undefeated". Very diverse and combined force. If you have not tried playing the larger stands in DBA you should at least become familiar with them in order to fight back when they pull a "slicky boy" on you.

III/54 Early Samurai

The Samurai Army was my very first completed Army. The figures are from Eureka in entirety. This army was also painted while deployed to Iraq in 2006. I am not entirely happy with the color selection and style that these troops were painted with. In general, I believe I should have not made them uniform.

The camp was a hoot, I very much enjoyed building it. The base is blue core foam. The tree is twisted solder with putty overlayed on the wire. I found the Buddha at some mall and broke it to make it look like a old shrine. Not sure what possessed me to make the camp snow covered. I used a hobby snow called Snow-Tex by DecoArt. Just brush/clump it on and it hardens over night into a great winter look.

Carthage...What a great army. Unless of course you plan on winning. The army is extremly diverse but sorely lacks killing power. These figures are entirly from Corvus Belli. I painted this army in Iraq as well. I have no Idea why the company manufactures this Carthage army and the wrong Roman opponent. Any one know why?

3Cv, never will use this option but like having the choice to make.

Ok, So I love the 3rd Infantry Division.

The Wild Mercs.. The camp is made from Blue Core foam as usual. The tent is a resin Ottoman one.

This Hawaiian Army was started in Iraq in 2006. I did not get a chance to finally finish it until several months, after I returned home. I used figures from Nick at Eureka Miniatures, excellent clean castings.
The camp was made of blue core foam and Elmer's glue. I carved the moon face idol to match the one that the holy man holds up on the General's stand. The water was an acrylic train resin that is easily melted on the stove and poured. lots of fun to use.

Man!, was I tired of painting butt floss and banana hammocks.................................

IV/62 100 Years' War English

My 100 Years' English Army is entirely of Corvus Belli miniatures. This Army has a lot of firsts in it for me; as both a, gamer and a painter. Firstly, as a DBA player, it has 6 Bw...yikes! At first I thought it would be a significant challenge to use all those Bw, then I realized that they were pretty easy unless Bd showed up in front of them.
The second thing that was new with this Army was the basing. I added pieces of blue core foam to add dimension and height to the stand. Worked out great. The only real learning point was to use Elmer's glue vs. any kind of "super glue". The super glue makes the foam melt...very destructive.

I have been painting figures since 1979. My first "wargame" was Johnny Reb which I played in Gainesville, Florida with my neighborhood friends. Ever since then I was hooked. My friend and I began to play a modified 20mm squad level WWII game where I learned how to shade my figures. Recently, I changed focus and began the DBA addiction that I am currently on.
